The video shows the figure holding the two swords as he tries to open the front door.

After his initial efforts were thwarted, he tries to enter the property via their gate before walking away when it didn’t open.

The residents’ daughter said her parents, who are both in their 70s, were left shaken when they saw the alarming footage later that morning.

She said: “The man had tried their front door, and back and front gates.

“I hate to think what could have happened if he’d had got in. “This could potentially have been somebody’s murder.”

The couple’s daughter now wants to warn others living in the Scraptoft Lane area of Leicester about the dangers of the sword wielding man – urging her parents and neighbours to keep their doors locked.

She added: “There are other vulnerable people in the area and some people do keep their doors unlocked in case they suffer a fall or something.”

The woman, who does not live far from her parents, has reported the incident to the police as enquiries remain ongoing.

She had described the area as a “nice place” but said the image of someone with a knife was “becoming all too familiar” in the city.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “We received a call on April 7 at 12.50am in the morning. A report of an attempted burglary in Scraptoft Lane was made.

“No arrests have been made in connection with the incident and enquiries remain ongoing.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the force quoting the reference number 22000197059.
