Liverpool fan dies after falling ill before Champions League draw with Benfica as club pay tribute

A LIVERPOOL fan has passed away after being taken ill before the Reds’ Champions League clash against Benfica on Wednesday night.

The club have paid touching tribute to the supporter following the sad news.

A spokesperson for Liverpool praised the “heroic” efforts of the emergency services after the fan was taken ill.

The statement said: “First and foremost, the condolences and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with the supporter’s family, loved ones and friends.

“We would like to thank the emergency services for their heroic efforts in providing urgent care and our appreciation to our medical professionals, stewards and all supporters in the vicinity of the incident for their assistance.”

The supporter was taken ill around 20 minutes before the start of the game in the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand, according to The Athletic.

It’s claimed they received medical assistance “within minutes”, and were immediately taken to hospital by an ambulance that was already on-site at Anfield.

Merseyside Police escorted the ambulance on its way to hospital in order for it to arrive faster.

Sadly though the man in his sixties has been confirmed to have passed away.

Liverpool’s official Twitter account paid tribute, saying: “It is with great regret that we can confirm that a supporter who was taken ill ahead of last night’s fixture against Benfica has sadly passed away.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with the supporter’s family, loved ones and friends.”

And a statement from Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that a man has sadly died after falling ill during the Liverpool vs Benfica football match last night, Wednesday 13 April, at Anfield.

“Prior to the game a man in his 60s was taken to hospital from the stadium for emergency treatment but sadly died a short time later.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the man’s family.”
