Rio Ferdinand demands Man Utd players focus on own performances after Everton shocker with Ten Hag set for manager job

RIO FERDINAND has called on Manchester United’s senior players to step up and “lead” after their shock 1-0 defeat to Everton.

The Red Devils‘ chances of securing Champions League football are slipping away by the week.

Anthony Gordon scored the winner for the Toffees to ease their relegation fears.

Man Utd legend Ferdinand has put United’s players on blast, especially the senior figures, who need to step up and “lead.”

Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand demanded the players focus on their own performances.

He said: “Uncertainty isn’t great at any level. You expect it to be organised, but we are where we are.

“Man Utd have to get results, the players have to disassociate themselves with what goes on off pitch. You don’t get yourselves involved on that.

“You have got to get your head away from that. As players, the experienced players have to lead this.

“There are no excuses, we have got things to do.

“We have a champions league position to play for.

“I wasn’t sure if Man Utd would get a result today, and that tells you where they are.

“You don’t know what you will get out of them, as a team and players, and that’s a team going for the Champions League.”

United have just one win in their last six games across all competitions.

The win came against Tottenham in a game which Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick.

But today’s loss is a “disgrace”, according to first-team shot stopper David de Gea.

The Spaniard said: “It is a disgrace from us, we should be winning this game.

“We don’t score but we don’t create proper chances to score. We are not good enough, that is for sure.

“It will be difficult to be in the top four. They played Wednesday and they were tired but they had more desire than us, that is not acceptable.

“Very sad to lose today.”

Erik ten Hag looks to be the man who’ll look to turn United’s fortunes around from next season.

The Dutchman is reportedly demanding a 100 per cent say in United’s transfer policy.

Ten Hag has insisted on overseeing all incomings and outgoings, as well as contract renewals.

And one early item for the agenda could be the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old has just over 12 months remaining on the two-year deal he penned last summer, but could leave at the end of the current campaign if Champions League qualification isn’t secured.
