Man City & Liverpool joint favourites to be European Champs, bookies fancy an all-English final

LIVERPOOL and Manchester City are tied as favourites in the quest to become this years Champions of Europe, with both English sides tipped meet in the final.

Betfair place both the two English giants at 6/5 favourites to lift the trophy in Paris come the final on 28th May.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are touted as joint favourites with Manchester City to lift the Champions League trophy in May.

The Spanish pairing of Real Madrid and Villarreal are both expected to be dumped out of the competition at the semi-final stage, according to Betfair.

The bookmakers price a 14th Champions League title for Real Madrid at 6/1, with Villarreal priced at 20/1 to lift what would be the Europa League champions’ first Champions League title.

It’s a double England v Spain clash in the semi-finals this year, with Manchester City taking on Real Madrid in a repeat of the 2019-20 last 16 clash, from which Pep Guardiola’s City progressed.

Guardiola’s side are 4/11 favourites to overcome their Spanish opponents this time around, with a place for Real Madrid in the final priced at 2/1.

Liverpool face the easier semi-final on paper, taking on Unai Emery’s Villarreal side who caused a shock by knocking out Bayern Munich in the quarter finals earlier this week.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are 1/7 favourites to book their spot in what would be their 10th final, with Emery’s underdogs priced at 9/2 from Betfair.

Liverpool are aiming to win their seventh Champions League trophy, the most for an English team, having picked up their sixth in 2019, when Klopp’s side downed Tottenham 2-0 in an all-English affair in Madrid.

It was their second final in a row, after succumbing 3-1 to Real Madrid the previous year in Kiev.

Manchester City are still yet to pick up their first Champions League trophy, despite reaching at least the last 8 in six of the last seven seasons.

Last season was the closest they’ve been, losing 1-0 to Chelsea in the final in Porto to Kai Havertz’s first half goal.

Real Madrid are the the most successful team in the competition’s history, lifting the trophy on 13 occasions, including four in a five year period between 2014-2018.

They are the only team to win the title in consecutive years since the tournament’s rebranding in 1992, winning three on the trot from 2016 onwards, culminating in defeating Klopp’s Liverpool 3-1 in 2018.

Villarreal, like Manchester City, have never won the Champions League before, and they’ve equalled their best ever season in the tournament this year by reaching the last four.

The current Europa League champions reached the same stage in 2006, when a last minute penalty miss from the Spanish side sent Arsenal through to the final.
